After thinking it over, perhaps we, The People, should consider it seriously for several reasons.
Problem: We are a nation in debt. This debt could easily be solved by allowing several of these states to secede.
Resolution: With the exception of the petition leader (Texas), the top states that want to secede are also those that receive the most federal tax dollars. These states take in more federal funding than they pay into the Republic, and that alone would stop the drain on our finances. (See map and this article)
Problem: These states would no longer be able to simply use federal services such as our military, FEMA, our interstates, railroads, airspace, power grid, waterways, etc...
Resolution: If they want to utilize things like our travel venues, water, gas, power grid, etc.. we charge them for that usage. And, they must pay extra for non-green energy sources, and they will pay penalties for going over that limit. REVENUE!
Problem: The Tea Party has taken control of the Republican Party and has completely alienated everyone but right-wing fundamentalists.
Resolution: By allowing these top red states to secede, it destroys the power of the Tea Party and allows for us to make real election and voter reforms.
Problem: The majority of those wanting to secede believe that this is a Christian nation. No matter how many times they've been told or shown evidence that the Founding Fathers were not Christian, or how many times we throw the Treaty of Tripoli (article 11) at them, they refuse to believe it, and attempt to legislate their religious beliefs into our secular society.
Resolution: By allowing these
Problem: There are people living in those states wanting secession that prefer to stay a part of our Union.
Resolution: These states would have to pay the relocation fees for those who do not want to be a part of their
Problem: There are major corporations who have factories, headquarters, etc... that may not want to be located in one of these newly formed countries.
Resolution: The new country would be responsible for some sort of restitution to these companies who will now have to relocate to an area of the Union suitable for their businesses. This should also apply to small business owners who want to move. This should also include relocation fees for all employees who want to move with the business.
Problem: These states will not be protected by our military after becoming a country. This could leave the United States vulnerable to attack.
Resolution: These states MUST sign iron-clad agreements that they will have 21st century military personnel and equipment prior to a full secession. They will be responsible to ensure that their problems do not become ours.
Other issues they will face: No FBI, no CIA, no ambassadors to other nations who may choose not to recognize them, no passports, no monetary system, etc.. They will immediately become 3rd world countries, and will need to quickly assume responsibility for these issues.
The biggest problem I see for those of us in the Union is their vulnerability to take over by other countries. I really don't want us being allies with them, as I can see us being dragged into a war to defend their weak countries and then we'd have to help them rebuild. Landscape-wise, we'd have to be sure to look at how that plays out, especially for our states on the west coast that have no intention of leaving our Union.
All in all, it's pretty much a financial win for our Union. Less of a drain on our society all around, less people in Congress making it difficult to get things done, and revenue that can be routed to states that are productive.
The more I think about it, the more I think it's worth considering.
