My son (age 21) and I went to lunch today. The restaurant was playing music from my era. I am a good mom. I educated my children on the classics... you know, Zepplin, Seger, Boston, Skynard, Floyd, Blackfoot, The Doors, The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, Styx, Kansas, et al...
My child commented during our meal that our generation had the best music, and we would be remembered for those classics, where his would be remembered for Britney Spears and Justin Bieber. And, I agreed- to a certain point. I had to remind him that in every generation there are songs over-played on the radio... those to which we all are so saturated that by sheer osmosis, we know all of the words, like it or not.
There are songs of my generation.. they are the songs of shame. Songs that we knew, perhaps even liked, but definitely could regurgitate every single lyric at any given moment. And, I proved it when we got home by playing the following:
Readers of my generation, do not even try to tell me you didn't know all of the words.. you did.. you sang it, and you even remember where you were at least one time you heard these songs.. and it's time to fess up. While yes, we brought the world the ultimate rock, we also brought them Disco, and sappy groups like Air Supply. Bragging rights may be ours.. but we contributed to our national shame as well. It's okay.. I'm not leaving you here. I'll give you something to redeem yourself right here:
You're welcome, America ;)
