This week's stew has a feel-good flavor to it. We have a special poem, which I think is pretty powerful, a guest blogger, and much more, today!

Samhain's Sirens kicked off the first successful week of the Halloween/Samhain Extravaganza.

Congratulations to Katie Creager and NC Dad- winners of the first two giveaways. Three more to be announced tomorrow, so be sure not to miss out on Monday's treats!

I know all of the Sirens have been truly enjoying the great fun, and we've received lots of LOVELY feedback on how much fun our participants are having.. that was our plan all along!

This week calls for more introspection- to be expected at this time of year. With Jupiter in retrograde and the weekly tarot & totems, you'll see the pattern being weaved already. All beautiful things to come.

And now, without further adieu, on to the stew...

Happy Birthday to Wendy Coleman, Spirit Runner, Marc Roney, Barbra Annino(!!), Eternal Scribe, A.c. Fisher-Aldag (;)), Christina Harrison, and Gwydion Ap'Morrygan. May your next year of life be the best ever, and may it bring you joy, peace, happiness, health and all good things in abundance.

Announcement:The Wild Hunt is Leaving Patheos
Kallan's note: I couldn't be more thrilled. I have never liked Patheos. I've always felt they were in it for SEO and ad-dollars, rather than good content. Jason will need financial support to stay independent. I'll be plugging for just that on his behalf when he asks for it. He's one of the best Pagan writers in our community, and I'm looking forward to being able to read him again on his independent site.

A Poem by Lyssa Riggs

Billows of political smoke
pouring down their throats
they dont hope for a new day
they pray
and prey..
and gaze at the kaleidoscope of time
behind passionless eyes.
Did you think they'd make a change?
So completely out of range.
they'll be chasing circles soon

just waiting on the moon
to tell them who will claim the stars
forgotten who they are.
The battle for the age is won when noone else has a gun.
Run for President.
RUN.

Pagan Lore with Karen Szabo

Good Morning, and welcome to the Pagan Lore!
Sunday, October 7
In the fifteenth century, peasants in Germany celebrated a week-long festival called the Kermesse. A Pagan icon (or some other sacred object) would be unearthed from its yearlong burial spot and then paraded through the village on top of gaily decorated pole. After a week of feasting, dancing, and games, the villagers would dress up in their mourning attire and rebury the icon in its grave, where it would remain until the next year's Kermesse.
On this date in the year 1909, famous author and Gardnerian Witch Arnold Crowther was born in Kent, England. He was initiated into the Craft in 1960 by Patricia Dawson, whom he later married. He passed away on Beltane-Sabbat in the year 1974.

Monday, October 8
On this day, an annual good luck festival called Chung Yeung Day (the Festival of High Places) is celebrated in China. Traditionally good omen kites are flown to carry away evil spirits. The festival also commemorates an ancient Chinese scholar named Huan Ching who, upon heeding the warning of a soothsayer, escaped with his family and friends high into the hills and thereby avoided a mysterious plague of death which swept through the village below, killing every living thing in sight.

Tuesday, October 9
Day of Felicitas. A festival celebrating the ancient Roman Goddess of luck and good fortune was held annually on this date in many parts of Italy. For many Wiccans and modern Witches, it is a time for castingspells and making amulets to attract good luck or to end a streak of bad luck.

Wednesday, October 10
Throughout the country of Brazil, the annual Festival of Light begins on this date. The centuries-old festival, which is celebrated for two consecutive weeks, includes a parade of penance and the lighting of candles, torches, and hearth-fires to symbolically drive away the spirits of darkness who bring evil and misfortune.

Thursday, October 11
Every year on this date, Witches in the countries of Denmark and Germany honor the Old Lady of the Elder Trees, an ancient Pagan spirit who dwells within and watches over each and every tree of the elder family. Before cutting any branches to use as magick wands, a libation of elderberry wine is poured onto the tree's roots and a special prayer is recited.

Friday, October 12
On this date in the year 1875, famous occultists and ceremonial magician Aleister Crowley was born in Warwickshire, England. He authored many popular and controversial books on the subject of magick, and was notorious for his rites of sex magick, ceremonial sorcery, and blood sacrifices. Crowley often referred to himself as the Beast of the Apocalypse and was nicknamed The Wickedest Man in the world by the news media and by many who knew him personally. He died on December 1, 1947, and after his cremation, his ashes were shipped to his followers in the United States of America.
Also on this date in the year 1888, famous ceremonial magician and occult author Eliphas Levi died.

Saturday, October 13
On this date in the year 1917, the Goddess in the guise of the Virgin Mary made her final visit (as promised earlier that year) to three children in the Portuguese town of Fatima. She revealed many predictions to the children, and a crowd of over 70,000 pilgrims who gathered for the miraculous event witnessed a strange object--resembling a huge silver disk blazing with colored flames--fly through the sky.

See you next time with more Pagan lore as we count down toward Samhain!  Have a great week, everyone!

And Then I Saw the Light …..
By: Renee Avard of StarSteps
September 30, 2012

Stop. Collaborate. And listen. No, I am most definitely not rapping the well-known nineties song, but, I am telling you to do those three things and you will find out why in a few minutes.

Most people in my circle of friends meditate. When I first discovered my Spiritual Path, I decided to give it a chance. So, I dove right in. Early attempts consisted of my naivety showing as I went down the path of stereotyping meditation. I followed celebrities who claimed to be changed by meditating and I worked with Yoga because everyone else said I should. I went even further into the “look the right part” mindset that I tried to get in a comfortable position shown to me in Yoga class, I made the lighting just the right and studied which color candles and incense to use that would go with my intention, writing out what I should say and do and having the words in front of me (where I would peek out of one eye to read specifically what I was to do next) and I worked on clearing my head. The meditations I attempted during this time frame never helped me and put me off to the whole idea. Whether it was the fact I could never switch my thinking off so I never had a clear head or the Yogic positions were too hard to get into, it did not matter as I thought 'I can't do this' and I felt that the attempting to meditate thing had become too much work and a huge chore.

Over the years that followed those times, I was told by many people that I would not be so anxiety-ridden or stressed if I just meditated. The mere mention of the “M” word made me feel immediately nervous, curious and also a bit clueless. I felt as though I was such an amateur and, so because of that, I believed that I was not good enough to meditate. Enter the Universe and it's Divine intervention. Something inside me just knew that I was ready to attempt the meditation thing again. Not only did I feel I should try, but I felt pushed to give it another shot.

The first thing I did was to STOP. When deciding to meditate, I had to stop and decide to just be. I knew completely clearing my mind was always a huge challenge in the past, so I went another direction. So I decided what was to be my main “focus” of that meditation's work. Then, I would say aloud the thoughts and ideas I had related to the subject of my choosing while soft, lyric-less music played in the background. Doing this kept my mind occupied and easily, I was able to concentrate on my intention (and I even did so without reading a word for word breakdown) and I sat how I wanted to sit, and did what made me comfortable and I was transported to a very amazing world and knew I would be visiting often. I found, in this way of doing things, that I actually looked forward to my meditation time. I craved it. And I loved the calmness and absolute honest to goodness smile that would come across every time I did this.

Next thing I did was to COLLABORATE. Once I got the hang of my way of meditating, I decided to seek out groups, friends, and various guided meditations. Reaching out to your friends or hopping online and do a search for varying meditations can be very rewarding. I am hooked on some amazing people that provide the most gorgeous meditations!

And finally, the main thing I do (and everyone should do more of) is to LISTEN. There is that quote that we have all heard that is very true and it goes along the lines of the fact that God gave us one mouth, but two ears. To have productive meditation time, it is best to listen to your instinct on what to say or think of. For me, I had always seen meditating as a chore and I did not know how to quiet the thoughts. Now, using my own techniques, I am able to enjoy the whole experience and I would actually accomplish desired results.

I had myself convinced that I would never get the hang of meditation, that I was not as 'skilled' as others and that it seemed to only be for the 'other' people. I am so blessed for the Divine intervention that planted the idea to begin meditating again and thanks also to my heart, soul and mind changing my entire thought process to focus on positivity. In the past, I have been on many medications for varying issues, including generalized anxiety disorder which I thought would require medical intervention for the rest of my life. I accepted that at first, until I could not do it any longer. Not only does meditation help with all of my health issues, it has completely assisted me overcome certain problems and now, I do not even experience some of the scattered chaos-centered ailments of the past.

I was under the impression that there was no way meditating would actually work, or that it would help ease my struggles in various aspects of my life. But, it does work! I love my meditation time – I love to throw on some soft instrumental music or a Guided meditation and just breathe and take in the serenity of that very moment .. the here and now. I have a meditation area here at home, and I recommend creating a spot to anyone. It can be as elaborate as you would like it to be; or it could be just a small corner on your kitchen counter. Having that sacred spot will always help the intentions of your meditations and will give you a place to really focus on your needs.

I have learned a valuable lesson over the course of these many years and through meditation, I have seen the light I have inside. I am ENOUGH. Yep, that is right, ME, I am doing enough, I am being enough, I am working enough, I am loving enough, and most definitely, I just AM!

This Week in Astrology

Jupiter in Retrograde: "Jupiter is retrograde from early October 2012 till the end of January 2013. This is a regular cycle occurring every 13 months and lasting for about 4 months. During the retrograde motion, the normal Jupiter things like growth, happiness, wealth, our philosophy or belief systems, can be the source of introspection and hard work due to circumstances that seem karmic in nature...

Last Quarter Moon: October 8, 3:33 am EDT
"The Quarter Moons remind me of how clumsy I was as a girl. I skinned my knees at roller skating. I had a hard time keeping my balance while learning to ride a bike. I could fall just by walking on a sidewalk, when for no reason at all, my ankles would suddenly give way. My body, it seemed, often misread the situation, moving out of rhythm with the surrounding world..."

Song of the Week by Kestril Trueseeker

Weekly Tarot : The Hermit

The Vanessa Tarot
Key Words and Phrases: Introspection, Seeking Guidance, Solitude, Seeking Greater Understanding

Contrary to what the key words and phrases might bring to mind, the hermit is always seen on the move. Constantly searching, seeking, looking for answers; the hermit is associated with Virgo. Virgos tend to have a restless spirit, never quite satisfied, always the perfectionist.

While they are always seeking, it is with an inward focus. We have all the answers we need inside. We just have to look inward to find them.

"Like an artist who hides away for days then emerges to paint a masterpiece, this quiet time allows all the pieces to fall into place. Their minds are alive, and they can see things they weren't able to see before. So go ahead and encourage them to take late night drives, long walks, hide in their room or go on retreat for a month. When they come back, they'll have a new understanding of the world, of their lives, and of themselves. It'll be the best thing for them, and for everyone else."  ~Thirteen from Aclectic Tarot

"The Hermit often suggests a need for time alone - a period of reflection when distractions are limited. In times of action and high energy, he stands for the still center that must be created for balance. He can also indicate that withdrawal or retreat is advised for the moment. In addition, the Hermit can represent seeking of all kinds, especially for deeper understanding or the truth of a situation. "Seek, and ye shall find," we have been told, and so the Hermit stands for guidance as well. We can receive help from wise teachers, and, in turn, help others as we progress." ~LearnTarot

Weekly Totem: Owl

Great Horned Owl
Silence, Solitude, Seeing what's hidden, Heightened Intuition, Night Dreaming
Owl is sacred to many different cultures and has varying meanings accordingly. For the most part, owl is about listening to your intuition, seeing through what's purposefully hidden, knowing truth, trusting in the dark/night and paying attention to your dream messages. This is a time of sacred solitude and listening to one's ancestors; heeding warnings; preparing strategically for battles or conflicts.  Take time this week to reflect on owl's meaning in your own life, and allow those messages to help you in your growth.

Shameless Plug

One of this week's Shameless Plugs is for Raven Grimassi's new book: "The Cimaruta and Other Magical Charms from Old Italy"

Here is some great information on it from Raven's shop site:
"The herb known as rue has been associated with magic and protection since ancient Roman times, if not longer. This plant was later fashioned into a charm, which is known today as the cimaruta. Decades of research and investigation now bring forth the most thorough and complete work ever published on the cimaruta charm.

Author and scholar Raven Grimassi shares the old lore of Italy along with his personal insights about  rue and the  cimaruta  charm. The author includes an exploration of the cimaruta charm in both folk magic and witchcraft traditions. Each of the symbols appearing on the  cimaruta  are examined and their meanings revealed.

This modern work is sure to delight anyone interested in Old World lore, legend, and magic."
If you've never visited Raven's site, you should definitely go do that. No, right now. I'll wait ;)

I'm plugging it again. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and my team is participating in The Race for the Cure event in Hunt Valley MD. Our name is Preserve the Curves. We're working hard to raise a goal of $500.00 for our team. ANY amount you can donate for this really worthy cause is so welcome. We'll take a $1.00 donation, believe me! Thank you so much for supporting us. We're wearing hats and boas in your honor :)

To make a donation click here.

Last, but not least, Paws Out Pet Boutique and Bakery, run by my friend, Tiffanie Dovich in Georgia. Her website has a bit of a glitch right now, but come check out her Facebook Page. Stop by and let her know I sent you :)

And as a note to all of my new readers: I do not receive any kickbacks or payment of any kind. I shamelessly plug what I like when I like :)

That's it for this week's Stew. Mull. Digest. Enjoy!
